About the Project

This website chronicles the historic preservation efforts of American Legion James Reese Europe Post No. 5. The Post was founded in 1919 by returning African American World War I veterans, who were not permitted to join white American Legion posts. In 1954, the Post purchased its current home at 2027 North Capitol Street Northeast. This historic house and the decades’ worth of documents, photographs and artifacts, have been the focus of archiving and preservation efforts assisted by an American University Metropolitan Policy Center grant supporting a collaboration between the university’s Washington College of Law and School of Communication.

This website’s content was produced by American University School of Communication M.A. in Journalism and Public Affairs students in Prof. Angie Chuang’s Race, Ethnic and Community Reporting class. Prof. Brenda V. Smith and students of the Community & Economic Development Law Clinic. The website development and design were by Aaron Wentt and art directed by Lisa Villamil.
